Regional Chair Emmerson called the meeting to order at 9 a.m. and made the following remarks:

“We acknowledge the land we are meeting on today is the traditional territory of many First Nations, including the Chippewas of Georgina Island and the Mississaugas of the Credit.

These lands are now home to many diverse Indigenous peoples.

We also acknowledge that York Region falls under Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit and the Williams Treaties with several Mississauga and Chippewas First Nations.”

Dr. Karim Kurji, York Region Medical Officer of Health provided a verbal update on the status of COVID-19 and responded to questions from Members of Council.

    That Council receive the correspondence from Fernando Lamanna, Municipal Clerk, Town of East Gwillimbury dated May 5, 2021 and refer it to staff.

Regional Chair Emmerson announced the passing of former Richmond Hill and Regional Councillor Lois Hancey and expressed condolences to family, friends and loved ones. It was noted flags at the York Region Administrative Centre were lowered to half-mast in her honour.

Regional Chair Emmerson noted May 3, 2021 was World Press Freedom Day and thanked local, regional and national journalists for their ongoing work in the fight against COVID-19 and for partnership in keeping York Region residents informed. 

Regional Chair Emmerson noted May 10 to 16, 2021 is National Nurses Week in Canada. The Chairman thanked the thousands of women and men in our communities dedicating their lives to the health and well-being of others.
