Regional Councillor Vegh, Chair of the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee called the meeting to order at 4 p.m. and made the following remarks:

“We acknowledge the land we are meeting on today is the traditional territory of many First Nations, including the Chippewas of Georgina Island and the Mississaugas of the Credit. These lands are now home to many diverse Indigenous peoples.

We also acknowledge that York Region falls under Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit and the Williams Treaties with several Mississauga and Chippewas First Nations.”

Committee elected Joann Simmons as Vice Chair of the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee for 2020.

Committee received the presentation by Melissa McEnroe, Manager, Affordable Housing Development, Housing Services, Community and Health Services and Janet Porter, Housing Development Planner, Affordable Housing Development, Housing Services, Community and Health Services.

Regional Councillor Vegh provided an overview of the upcoming York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee Session that is scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. on March 31, 2020 at the Aurora Public Library.

Vito Spatafora, Chair of the Forum Planning Subcommittee introduced the members of the subcommittee, as follows:

  • David Hingsburger
  • Joanne Simmons
  • Kirsten Hill

Mr. Spatafora provided details of a proposed workshop for the Forum, to be held during National AccessAbility Week, and the Committee made the following recommendations:

  1. That the architectural and design company "Human Space" facilitate a workshop at the York Region Accessibility Forum.
  2. That the event be held on June 3, 2020 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. including a light lunch.
  3. That the Subcommittee Chair send an invitation to the local Accessibility Advisory Committees.

Lois Davies, Manager, Social Policy and Accessibility, Strategies and Partnerships Branch, provided updates on the following:

Accessibility Compliance Report

The Region is required to submit this report every two years to declare our compliance for each applicable requirement of the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulations. Ms. Davies advised that our submission reported 100% compliance.

2019 Accessibility Status Report

This report highlights the Region's actions to comply with AODA requirements, and how we go beyond the mandatory requirements to create an accessible York Region.

The report includes contributions from every department across the corporation and York Regional Police.

The next meeting is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 in Committee Room A.
