Regional Councillor Hamilton called the meeting to order at 4 p.m. and made the following remarks:

“I would like to begin today’s meeting by acknowledging that York Region extends over lands originally used and occupied by Indigenous Peoples, and on behalf of York Region, I would like to thank First Nations and the Métis for sharing this land.

I would also like to acknowledge the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation as our closest First Nation community.”

  • Committee received the presentation from Andrea Griepsma, Manager, Digital, Design and Public Relations and Neal Kelly, Corporate Digital Specialist, Corporate Communications, Corporate Services.

Lois Davies, Manager, Social Policy and Accessibility, Strategies and Partnerships Branch, Community and Health Services provided the following updates:

The province has released proposed changes to the legislation and is inviting feedback by October 18, 2019 from individuals and organizations across Ontario.  Members of the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee are encouraged to provide input regarding these proposed changes. 

These sessions are hosted by the Toronto Transit Commission's Advisory Committee on Accessible Transit with a view to improve the coordination between service providers in the GTA, resulting in better service.  Astley Dennis and Kirsten Hill, members of the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee have volunteered to represent the committee at these meetings. The next meeting on October 3, 2019 will be hosted by York Region Transit at the Richmond Hill facility, 55 Orlando Avenue.

The East Gwillimbury Accessibility Advisory Committee has invited the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee and York Region staff to present their long term corporate strategies, visions and multi-year accessibility plan.  This meeting has been scheduled on October 30, 2019, and volunteers are being sought from this committee to participate in the meeting.

Volunteers from this committee are being sought to participate in a joint planning committee to develop a forum for local accessibility advisory committees to be held in June 2020.

The next meeting of the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee is scheduled on Wednesday, November 27, 2019.
